emerald slippers
11. Sew an accessory or garment. 8 pts
Another project from my stash of felted wool with a penny rug-ish kinda deal to it. While I made these bad boys I watched the BBC version of “Pride and Prejudice” (yes, the 6 hour one), a rather interesting Johnny Depp flick “Dead Man”, and several episodes of Dr. Who. An eclectic assortment of viewing pleasure, if I say so myself.
For bonus points, I have attempted to incorporate winsh 28. Create a piece in which your state flower is thematically central. 4 pts. That would be Mountain Laurel, the state flower of Pennsylvania. Because I say it is. See? Mountain Laurel grows pretty wild and free in the mountains near where I live. It’s quite beautiful in the spring and early summer. It has the same kind of leaves as a rhododendron.
Finally going to celebrate Christmas with my p’s this weekend. Good thing we waited until now, because these slippers are my mother’s gift. LLO asked me if I’d make her a pair. I can’t feel my fingers. She’s going to have to wait a little while. She wants purple. Of course.
I read Hitchhiker’s Guide for the first time. Laughed myself silly. And I have reacquainted myself with the reasons I used to like reading Stephen King. Unfortunately the book is a freaking doorstop. I prefer my books a little more portable.
Okey dokey. That’s my life in a nutshell.

Pretty flower. I should watch Pride and Prejudice, I’d get a lot of crocheting work done. Awesome slippers, I hope she likes. I don’t know what the state flower of New Jersey is. I think I looked it up once but I forgot. The bird is the Goldfinch, I know.
Yes, Hitchhiker’s is funny! Did you read all four books or just the first? And then read the other stuff he wrote, because Douglas Adams was hilarious. I’ve never read anything by Stephen King except this non-fiction essay he wrote about getting hit by a truck, which was actually quite amusing despite the subject matter. Oh, and I watched The Shining, if that counts.
you are so creative. I like how you incorporated the Mt Laurel, such a cute flower.
Which King book did you read?
We ae, once again, totally on the same wave lenght from P &P (although slightly more abbreviated ) to Dead Man Johnny to Dr, Who. LOVE these slippers although I’m pretty sure Mountain Laurel is the Connecticut state flower (or should be)
Hitchikers would be SO GOOD right about now – think I’ll see if I can find it on my Nook . . .hmmmm…or maybe in a bookcase. Somewhere…xxxooo
@leaflesstree - and it’s a wonderful movie. story. you know. read the first only. plan to read the others but have my 8″ of library books to get through first. i read a lot of king back when i liked to be scared. i liked john saul who is a sick person. and vc andrews for the lighter days. i don’t like to be scared anymore. (i have children. ha ha)
@Crystalinne - i started the one with the date. 11/22/63 or something like that. i have a bad memory for historical dates.
Wow, your slippers really do look like the flower! And they’re pretty cool. Nice job!
@SandraErickson - i adore the shorter version of P&P. watched it 31 days in a row when i first discovered it. i’m better now.
you are right, mountain laurel is ALSO the state flower of connecticut.
never knew about the PA state flower, how pretty
@Marica0701 - you are a wonderful human being. thank you for saying so.
Mountain laurel is marvelous. Douglas Adams was fantastic. My superlatives say I must be in a good mood. Maybe it’s the weekend.
:O those sleepers look amazing I love the flower as i love most flowers but this one is particularly beautiful, it’s amazingly pretty.
Nice nuts! Oh, and slippers, too!
I like those! Well done!
wow I wish I could make slippers but then I figure I’d just gain more static electricity
i have never seen that flower before; beautiful. heh. so glad to hear you catching up/enjoying long movies AND books. wow. i mean, yay!
Slippers are pretty, just like your state flower.
Your slippers are pretty. I can understand why you can’t feel your fingers.
I love them! What do you use to pad/strengthen the soles?
Movie craft binges are the best. If I didn’t need to clean my house so very badly, I would declare it such a day.
@lanney - which is marvelously fantastic!
@meddwl - thanks. i think it’s a pretty flower too. fantastic covering a mountainside.
@songoftheheart - snort! considering some conversations i had yesterday. ahem. thank you.
@Grannys_Place - thanks so much!
@godfatherofgreenbay - i have no idea if she’ll even wear them.
@Bels_Kaylar - it is very fine. if only i’d catch up on the zzzz’s life would be perfect.
@armnatmom - thank you.
@Broom_Service - at least no holes. i usually put holes in the fingers. what am i going to do next?
@anvilsandedelweiss - i “quilted” the soles (by machine, egads) and i read somewhere that i can put paint dots on the bottom for nonslip. they aren’t floppy anymore. i couldn’t figure out what else to do as i travel this new land.
Those are some awesome slippers!! I really need some slippers. I am not going to attempt to make any garments but I might “sew” an accessory. Do patches on a girl scout vest count??? I say YES.
@ordinarybutloud - i say yes as well. you’ve started your paper mache!! i haven’t. i can’t decide what to make. i was thinking a life size tree.
@promisesunshine - I did paper mache once when I was 8. It was a terrible experience, because I made a lumpy, unprofessional puppy that never crossed the line to “cute,” while the girl I admired and followed everywhere made the cutest, sweetest, sleeping little puppy dog I’ve ever seen before or since. I was SO JEALOUS. It was a terrible moment (series of moments). So. It’s good for me to do paper mache. I’m starting with a bowl.
@ordinarybutloud - therapeutic. letting go those 8 year old girl feelings. i learned the most amazing thing about paper mache last summer. glue water is a hundred times better than flour water. and you can use a paintbrush instead of hands.
@promisesunshine - uh….yeah, on both things. I use glue water (gluten-free). And I’m definitely using a paintbrush. HAHAHAHA. Wouldn’t have even CONSIDERED doing paper mache with flour and my hands.
@ordinarybutloud - that’s because you’re smart. that is how i’ve done paper mache WITH KIDS for years. they complain. can you imagine?
@promisesunshine - bahahahahahahahaha…even worse, busybody mothers like me would be all in your face about the gluten in the flour. YIKES. I’m not that smart. I just use Google, a LOT.
@ordinarybutloud - you use it better than i do, apparently. that’s how i learned about flour paste.
@promisesunshine - Do you need me to do a handy, dandy little spell like I did for the hubben?
@Broom_Service - you mean the one that involves clonking on the head? no thanks.
Very cool slippers! I think you nailed the scavenger hunt prompts!!
@murisopsis - thanks. only a bazillion more to go.
How adorable! I’d love a pair! :)
@promisesunshine - No, thwacking on the forehead, Silly. But, okay. I’ll be a good girl.
Dang you are talented! Those slippers are fancy. Have fun at the P’s.
I love those.
@CuddlyKat - @ZSA_MD - @Erika_Steele - thanks.
Awesome job!! I love them!
I used to avoid Douglas Adams because I found him threatening. I believe I might enjoy him now. Those are awesome felted slippers. I bet your mother will really enjoy them.
@distractedbyzombies - i really enjoyed it. i have a big collection of books from the library or i’d be reading the next one. he’s very funny. thanks.
@babiesone1963 - thanks
I totally missed this post. I’m sorry. : / this is cool, and you are talented with sewingness. that is an interesting series of programs to watch. Dead Man is very interesting. did you know that the music was done by Neil Young?
I wish Dr Who had a Spanish track.
Need to reread Hitchhiker. I thought about it recently because I saw The Hobbit and Bilbo played Arthur Dent in the HGTTG movie.
@plantinthewindow - yes, i did. i want to watch it again. i know i missed a lot of things the first time.
@Roadkill_Spatula - oh. that works. (bilbo as arthur dent).
Love the slippers, and the flower! I seldom wear slippers though.
Love the cute slippers. My wife has a big enough collection to start a store.
lol–finally celebrating Christmas. I cannot get anyone to buy into this, but I say celebrate it 2 weeks later and then we would buy all of the gifts much cheaper.
frank
@HUMOR_ME_NOW - we only do our immediate house on the day of. everyone else is later. (which means we’re shopping or otherwise for days after christmas)
@promisesunshine - Brilliant!!!!
