(really) warm woolen mittens
also known as not really oven mitts. I ran out of inclination to fix ‘em.

I have a weird thing for felting wool. I happened to have these fabrics in my basement. (’cause I have pretty much everything in my basement) Some lady I hardly know from church found out I sew and she asked if I wanted her stuff. I never say no. No matter how long the stuff is going to sit in my basement after I pick it up. Years, in this case. Anyhow. She had some wool things she’d started (apparently I’m not alone in this inability to finish stuff), which I supershrunk to satisfy my felting obsession. I had the plain stuff from another felting project. You do not want to know about that. It was crazy. I also happen to like penny rugs.
So. There we are.
A close-to-finished project which used up some stuff (but mostly used up an evening) and got me started on the winter scavenger hunt. Yippee skippy.

I’m curious to try out wool-felting. But I really can’t afford to pick up another crafting hobby or else I’ll go bankrupt at the tender age of 23
those look so warm
I like.
Ok, what does it mean to felt wool?
As long as they don’t end up in some place in your house and becoming lost…
I tried shrink felting for the first time this winter – shrunk a sweater that I had been keeping for years and not wearing, nor making into a vest. Used the fabric to start a stocking, used the scraps to make a Santa Claus. Glad enough that someone else collects fabric because they can. ((sigh)) now I have someplace to send mine when I start cleaning out the closet. Heh..and HA <3
I likes
@Marica0701 - it’s hard to find 100% fabric anymore. it’s fun with yarn too, though. once you figure out that you can crochet. (or was it knit? i can’t remember which one you think you can’t do.)
@godfatherofgreenbay - and now we’re having a tropical heatwave. i can’t test.
@Grannys_Place - @armnatmom - thanks, ladies.
@Zoz36 - :P
@SandraErickson - you have no idea. i managed a fabric store before children and home ownership. i’ve got stuff.
@songoftheheart - this kind of felting is super easy. just take wool and wash it in hot water a couple times. there are other kinds that involve sharp sticks (therefore not appropriate for me). it makes it very dense and soft.
Thats really spiffy.
That’s so nice.
that is too cool! do they work as oven mitts though? here’s a bit of advice: never pick up a hot skillet with a wet oven mitt, no matter what it’s made of
one of the mothers that i homeschooled with was very crafty (and talented photographer. ‘crunchy.xanga.com). she felted, too. it’s kinda lovely, how having young ones around will get one to try all sorts of things that one might not have attempted. because there was no failure, since anything we did was ‘teaching’. or something. <3 did i mention those are some sweet mitts you have there?
Love them! I love felted wool. I have never made it myself, but just added it to my to do list, lol. I love working with premade wool felt or craft felt. This is an awesome idea.
Wanders off to research this “penny rug” of which you speak.
I have some sweaters that accidentally got shrunk. I’m aiming to make some felted hat type things out of them eventually… although if I don’t do it soon, the weather will start getting warm again and I’ll change modes until next cool season.
@Thatslifekid - @angys_coco - thank you, kindly.
@mlbncsga - nope. none of that good protective stuff in them. they are outside mittens. i gotta put some elastic or some such in them. i learned the hard one on wetness of oven mitts. yeouch.
@Bels_Kaylar - i’ll look her up. i need to do more fun stuff with my kids.
@anvilsandedelweiss - i could buttonhole stitch all day long.
@oceanstarr - did you find? i was thinking about hats too. i have a bunch more wool.
@promisesunshine - OMG IN LOVE!!!!!! Thanks for the idea!!!
@oceanstarr - once upon a time I did a window treatment with penny rug theme. it was insane. (and then i got tired of it). so relaxing and soothing.
They look really ‘cool’ Carrie.
@ZSA_MD - thank you.
Awesome. Yes, I believe so. I have this impulse to feel the texture. Way to make something beautiful from the deep, dark pit!
What are penny rugs? Or is it a term you coined yourself? pun intended
Wool is so warm… sometimes i wish i was a sheep.
Even though wool is sort of “itchy” I have always loved the warmth of a peacoat. Looking up peacoat it is a sort of melton cloth with the nape densely made.
So why settle for just warm hands when you can also make the body warm?
@PPhilip - i have a wool coat i don’t like to wear. the lining is cold. i think wool is itchy too.
Every seamstress I know has a room full of materials that looks like chaos to me, yet they know exactly where and what everything is. Do you have a basement like this?
I love these!
@BoulderChristina - i don’t know where anything is.
@HankleDankle17 - baah
@vexations - you’re hilarious. no, real thing. penny rug
@WildWomanOfTheWest - they are very soft. i have to say. lined with flannel too.
@Erika_Steele - thanks!
@promisesunshine - flannel~
I do not understand these strange words like felting and penny rugs. I like your mittens. I need pot holders BADLY. I am definitely going to take a nap now. I thought you should know.
@distractedbyzombies - i had to buy new potholders. they are exciting. don’t worry about crafty stuff. no importance whatsoever. i’m supposed to be taking a nap, but instead i’m not.
@promisesunshine - that’s what I’m doing, too! I might get pissed off if this continues. crafty stuff is important! it’s just always humbling to realize all the stuff you don’t know. you know?
You are sooooo handy!
@olwd - handy. how clever.
I see the good in everything dear. hehehe
knowing my luck someone would take up mothing
cool
Well done! I love the pennies. I never say to sewing stuff either.
