update quartet
1. The first item.
LLO can be such a drama queen and stubborn. But sometimes she is about perfect. This afternoon I picked her up at the bus stop, which I never do, with the crazy plan to go pick out a tree (in the rain). She was cool with this plan. And she was cool with the fact I didn’t know where we were going and we got lost. And she was cool with our pitstop. (Probably because she got ice cream.) Then we drove back to the tree farm I knew where it was (but not the over-priced stuffy place we usually go). We were the only customers. Pretty shocking for a rainy Monday afternoon. Ha. Anyhow, really nice older guy was mildly surprised we wanted to cut down our own, but set us up and told us where to go (even though we didn’t listen.) And for the first time in the history of sunshine household tree picking, we did it in under 15 minutes and without arguments. LLOster and I cut the sweet thing down our very own selves and it’s even only a little bit dead. She was in charge of the cart with the tree and that was that. While we were waiting for the man to finish talking to the other customers who’d arrived while we were out, LLO and I explored the barn. Really cool barn full of antique stuff. Gas pumps, wringer washer, one of those cash registers with the keys you have push down on hard. Not sure why I didn’t take any photos, but I didn’t. Then she started asking questions, like she does. The guy told us about the barn. One part of the barn was 200 years old. The addition on the barn was 100 years old. How cool is that. Then LLO asked about the enormous pine cones that she’d seen in a basket, wanting to buy one. He let her pick one out. He insisted. Also told her what kind of tree it came from- sugar pine. Big pine cone. Ginormous.
Anyhow. Have tree, dirty knees, wet shoes, and pine needles in my hair. But my girl reminded me just how awesome her sauce is. Also she gave me an idea for a great gift for her. She just started basketball at her school which she loved. The elementary school with basketball hoops is just a block away.
2. The second item.
Got a phone call from friend/coworker. We’re going out to dinner with other peops from work. Earlier we’d made plans to walk together. The restaurant is a block from my house. She called to see if I was still ok with walking.. in the rain. Um. yea. It’s a block from my house and there’s no parking. And my knees are still wet. I’m ok with walking.Update: went out with people to a festive occasion and had fun. Shocking.
3. The third item.
I’ve gotten a series of emails from those nasty woman’s club people. Who, admittedly, aren’t quite so irritating now and were kind enough to change our potluck to a later time so I can come. I was surprised, actually. But anyhow. Some people are obsessing. My philosophy on potlucks- it all works out, just bring what you want. But, no. We’re apparently going to spend this entire week doing bulk emails about what people are bringing. Hence the artichoke pimento molded salad. Which, frankly, is enough to make me wanna hurl. I don’t know what I’m going to take, but it won’t be molded anything. Golly. Now I want to know what I’m making.4. The fourth item which is really the first item.
My tree is gorgeous.
Naked, but gorgeous.

This was as always so much fun to read, girls are adorable indeed and yours always sound like so much fun and they’re so very unique, I love ‘em
Congrats on your tree
Terrific post!
Have fun decorating the tree.
I’d give anything to have the fun you had in #1. I miss having kids. We’ve never cut a tree down. I am very envious of your life at times. Just sayin’. Glad you and your peops had fun.
artichoke pimento molded salad…!!!!!!!! yowza. People who get uptight about potlucks make me nuts (big surprise, I’m sure). Love the tree story. Did you know I’m allergic to Christmas trees?? It’s my only allergy. My eyes swell up to twice the size of my face when I go somewhere with a real tree. It’s interesting.
Getting and cutting down your Christmas tree… Delightful, sweet read. molded, Artichoke-Pimento salad, not so sweet.
@armnatmom - it was a good day. i will document the salad. believe me.
@ordinarybutloud - it’s a common allergy. i’m just glad no one in our house has it. i really hate artificial trees. (i’m sure yours is lovely. and obviously necessary)
@songoftheheart - i get that i’m lucky way beyond what i deserve. in a perfect world, you’d come with us. and it wouldn’t be raining.
@Bricker59 - yup. we will. or i will. or they will. someone will. thanks.
@xXxlovelylollipop - we have our moments.
Part of the reason we had an artificial tree most years is that my sister is allergic. The other reason was that the tree picking was a chaotic mess that resulted in someone crying and my mothers declaration that we are never going anywhere again. Glad yours went smoothly.
I am sort of glad I don’t have kids.
I have all my ornaments out but I haven’t pulled my tree out of the basement yet. Maybe tomorrow.
I bet that tree us going to be absolutely beautiful.
Haven’t bought a live tree in the mid to early 1970′s. Haven’t put up a tree since the mid 1980′s. Have gotten “lit” many Christmas’s. Sort of a Tradition. Sleeping in late, and a some of the hair of the dog that bit ya last night…
@leaflesstree - that’s us and the mall. used to be us and restaurants. we still don’t go to the mall. that is fine though, since i don’t want to go to the mall either.
@godfatherofgreenbay - and i’ll want to see your tree too.
@Grannys_Place - it will suit us. lopsided and quirky.
@Zoz36 - we had this scrawny fake tree my whole childhood.
I’m not having a tree this Christmas, so I am a little bit jealous. The last time I cut down a tree my 16 year old son and I struggled through sub zero temps and snow a quarter mile onto my friend’s 80 acre piece of wilderness with a hand saw. We cut down the first thing we found that would do: a seven foot hemlock (I swear it looked smaller in the woods) dragged it back to the car, drove it home and hauled it up to our third floor apartment. It was magnificent and magical and satisfied my need to EVER cut down another Christmas tree, again. heh. KUDOS to you and LLO. glad you had such a wonderful adventure…now about that molded salad…
I have a cookbook with a chapter called “Potlucks, or how to bring the water for the lemonade.”
Naked trees have their own kind of beauty.
@SandraErickson - funny. we usually get a bigger tree, by accident, when the man is with us. it must be testosterone. i think the slaying of the christmas tree is my statement about being in control of my holiday. that’s the only part i really get control over.
i think i’m making 20 pound cake for the potluck.
@ata_grandma - sounds like a great cookbook.
it really is a beautiful tree, just as it is. (but we have lots of cool ornaments)
@promisesunshine - awesome! Save me a piece.
I don’t know how I missed this post last night, but I did, which made me overeager this morning so I read too fast and missed the word “tree” in #4. It only takes a split second to come up with a lot of wild possibilities.
I think that’s absolutely wonderful. Hug the child for me. Great that you did stuff with people and liked it. Kind of huge for this time of year. I have to go to a party after working 3 jobs and not having time to go home and clean up. I will borrow your good attitude.
@lanney - you may borrow my good attitude. i have plenty right now. (#4. photos or it didn’t happen. ha ha ha)
i’m a social butterfly for the next bit. i have 3 more parties this week. none of which i can skip (i bailed on one on sunday)
hope yours turns out to be not so horrible.
argh. i missed this too, and now here on terrible i mean terrific tuesday
so glad re girl-child and tree. enough said. ?20 lb. cake? i saw you comment on this earlier, but now that you’ve said it again, a TWENTY pound cake? sheesh.
I want to know what you are taking to the potluck as well. Maybe photo blog of this gorgeous tree???
I think I’m having a Charlie Brown tree…or maybe the tiny artificial one I usually use. I wish I had room for a 7 ft tree. In every room. With two more outside. *Sigh* My go to for potlucks is called “Chicken bog” (really…Google it…lol) it’s a southern staple, and fairly cheap to make…poach/boil a chicken, (or buy a rotisserie one!) pull the meat off the bones, save it. Cook a BIG pot of rice with chicken broth or in the water the chicken boiled in, after you add a package of kielbasa, cut up in chunks. When the rice is done toss the chicken meat in. Salt, pepper to taste. It can feed an army, just add rice…lol It can be jazzed up with a bit of onion, and or red and green pepper, a little garlic, some spring onions, whatever you like with poached chicken..but the honest real recipe is just plain.
Plus if you’re far away from the south and have never had or heard of it you can call it Regional, and get points for creativity!
sounds like life is wet, molded, but good. good for you.
@Bels_Kaylar - super cute tuesday so far. it’s a pound cake, but it is pretty darn rich.
@Thatslifekid - i’m thumbing my nose at pimento people and making a sinfully delicious cake. dunno what i’m doing yet for the other one.
@moniet - recipe sounds good. any tree is a good tree.
@plantinthewindow - i’m a smidge happy right now. i’m almost sorry to say it. i’m just so glad to be done with school and i don’t care about anything else right now. i haven’t been free in so long.
@promisesunshine - I’ve got an end of the world potluck coming up. Oh what to make…
@Thatslifekid - that could be very entertaining.
There are days and then there are the days that remind you why you love life. I’m glad you had a love life day! Have fun with the potluck! I’m making sushi for the staff potluck. I figure most folks will not even try it and I can snarf most of it and not have to worry about the disgusting stuff like molded artichoke salad… hehe!
That must have been so much fun to cut the tree and bring it home. You are a good mother Carrie.
@murisopsis - incredibly fattening cake in the oven. sushi sounds wonderful.
@ZSA_MD - You are so sweet to say that, Zakiah. Thank you.
